Application of the term ‘school’
to the icon painting of Slobozhanshchyna

Abstract. Terminology issues are extremely important for a correct understanding of the essence of the topic being covered. In art history literature, the concept of school is often used. In particular, when studying icon painting, this concept is blurred and terms that are close in meaning, but not very defined in content, appear, such as “icon painting centers”, “icon painting crafts”, “icon painting styles”, “direction in icon painting”. The term “school”, be it scientific, technical, artistic, musical, icon-painting or another, refers to their special sectoral affiliation: relations to history, sociology, culture, etc., with their methodological and stylistic developments [1]. As with other sectors of activity, unity in the understanding of this term has not yet been developed, therefore, each sector has its own highly specific definitions. The purpose of this article is an attempt to streamline this terminology and apply it to icon painting created on the territory of Slobozhanshchyna.

Key words: Slobozhanshchyna, icon painting, schools, icon painting crafts, icon painting styles, direction in icon painting.
