Religious tourism and pilgrimage in the Russian Federation: current state and prospects of development

Abstract. The author analyzes current state and prospects of development of religious tourism and pilgrimage in Russia. Religious journeys are not only a social and cultural phenomenon that is inherent to world religions, but also one of the most important socio-cultural factors of modernity. The article presents the main provisions of the Program of development of religious tourism and pilgrimage in adopted by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society.

Key words: pilgrimage, prayer, worship, ritual, sacred place, Shrines of the Ecumenical Orthodoxy, religious tourism, travel.
