Historical and navigational experiment: theory, methodology, practice
Abstract. The article discusses issues of theory, methodology, and practical implementation of experimental research methods in the field of shipbuilding history and navigation development. Sea voyages on replicas of ancient vessels serve as a of objects (rafts, reed and papyrus boats, leather canoes, dugout canoes, replicas of historical ships, etc.) and situations characteristic of specific historical periods reflecting ancient value orientations and cognitive activities. The article devotes special attention to the long-term activities of the Marine Arctic Complex Expedition (MACE) of the Likhachev Russian Research Institute for Cultural and Natural Heritage, which has been conducting historical and navigational experiments in the Arctic since 1987.
