The space of the Church of the Transfiguration of the Kizhi Pogost in the context of Hierotopy

Abstract. The Church of the Transfiguration (1714) is the most remarkable part of the Kizhi Pogost. In 1990, the pogost was included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and in 1993 listed as a Russian Cultural Heritage site. The iconostasis of the Church of the Transfiguration is dated to the second half of the 18th century, has four levels and contains 105 icons (are from the late 17th century to the early 19th century). This article considers the question about the creation of sacred space of the Church of the Transfiguration in the context of Hierotopy – the modern concept is originally developed by Alexei Lidov.

Key words: hierotopy, sacred space, Kizhi Pogos, church, iconostasis, icon, cultural heritage.
