Interpretation of the semantics of «ship plots» in the iconography of the Russian North

Abstract. This article examines the cultural and historical foundations of the formation and development of symbolism in early Christian painting, special attention is paid to images of a ship and an anchor, as one of the key ancient Christian symbols. The characteristic of the development of the icon-painting school of the Russian North are presented and the interpretation of the meaning of «ship plots» in the iconography of the Russian North is given on the example of individual icons.
