Historical and artistic preconditions in Soviet monumental mosaic art

Abstract. The author aims to show under the influence of which cultural traditions, world tendencies and art schools the Soviet monumental mosaic art was formed. A brief historical overview is given from the traditions of Byzantine art to modernity. Soviet modernism is seen as part of the pan-European mosaic style of contemporary art. Examples of private mosaic workshops of Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Art Nouveau are given. The author introduces the most significant implemented projects in Russia before the collapse of the USSR. It is emphasized that many coloristic solutions, expressiveness, dynamic graphicity were acquired by Soviet monumental artists as a result of the influence of world trends in art and graphics and their interpretation in their own works.

Key words: mosaic, soviet monumentalism, byzantine art, florentine mosaic, modernism, art nouveau, art deco, Union of Artists, stagnation period, USSR, avant-garde.
