Marine Arctic Complex Expedition (MAKE) – ‘Polar Odyssey’ Club:
35 years of cooperation and experiments

Abstract. Maritime heritage is an important part of the historical, cultural and natural heritage of the Arctic. From the first year of activity of MAKE, a joint study of the traditions of Pomeranian shipbuilding, seafaring and shipping began with the Polar Odyssey Club. Based on the experience gained, the concept of «historical navigation experiment» and the methodology for conducting sea expeditions on replicas of historical ships were developed. The use of the traditions of northern shipbuilding and navigation helped to understand and master the production, household and cultural experience of the people, passed down from generation to generation, expressed in actions and ideas, recorded in traditions. The article discusses the long-term cooperation of a comprehensive study and use in the new conditions of traditional knowledge and experience of national shipbuilding and shipping in order to update it.

Key word: folk shipbuilding, Arctic, navigation, coast-dwellers, replicas of Russian historical ships, navigational experiments, cultural heritage, museum, popularization, water tourism.
