Study of five printed sheets of the unique botanical atlas «Hortus Eystettensis» (1713-1750) in the Scientific Expertise Department of the State Research Institute for Restoration

Abstract. The article is devoted to the results of a scientific examination of printed sheets from the unique botanical atlas «Hortus Eystettensis» (Eichstätt Garden), received by the Russian Institute of Restoration in 2008. This atlas was created in 1613 in the city of Eichstätt (Bavaria) by the botanist, artist and pharmacist Basilius Besler. Five editions of this botanical atlas are known. This article is devoted to the study of five printed sheets included in the fifth edition, work on which began in 1712 and was completed only in 1750. Information about the history of the creation of the atlas, its author and contents is provided. Five sheets that have undergone scientific examination are characterized and described. An important feature of this album is noted: many plants are reproduced in life-size, which, according to the author, makes it a unique reference material that still remains relevant to this day.

Key words: Hortus Eystettensis, plant atlas, botanical encyclopedia, art, German artists, expertise.
