Problems of preservation of finishing coatings during the restoration
of museum furniture and ways to solve them

Abstract. The purpose of the article is to highlight the problem of insufficient scientific research on furniture restoration in comparison with other areas of restoration. In scientific research, only a few publications address some aspects of scientific furniture restoration. Techniques in the field of restoration of painting and architecture have been studied in more detail and are widely used.

The article analyzes the problems of approaches to the restoration of cultural heritage objects, in particular furniture, methods for cleaning finishing coatings, identifying tasks, criteria for choosing cleaning methods depending on the degree of preservation and characteristics of contamination, methods for preserving finishing coatings. The influence of various substances and materials on contaminants and finishing coatings, such as foam, xylene, water, gasoline, acetone, etc., was analyzed. In the course of the study conducted by the author, results of the effectiveness of individual cleaning methods were obtained and an option was proposed for cleaning individual contaminants of wooden surfaces while preserving the existing finishing coatings, recommendations on the use of materials are given, the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed methods for both furniture and restorers are analyzed.
