Question of pioneering in the history of development of the Arctic

Abstracts. The article is devoted to the search for approaches to work on a new scientific research topic “Pioneering in the Arctic.” The presented materials contain information on the history of the development of the Arctic since the end of the 1st millennium AD. using various vessels. Particular attention is paid to the role of shipbuilding in the development of shipping, traditional crafts, navigation and development of the coasts and archipelagos of the Russian Arctic. As an evidence base, the results of an analysis of historical sources, literature and materials collected by the author on the history and current state of traditional shipbuilding and shipping are presented. The use of new information and artifacts in the article - historical ships and boats - allows us to clearly demonstrate the high technological level of shipbuilding in the Russian North. The results of traditional shipbuilding research prove the priorities of the peoples of Russia in the development of our country's Arctic coastal, island and sea spaces, which is especially relevant in the current period of shipping development in global logistics.

Key words: comprehensive field research, Arctic, historical and cultural heritage, pioneering, waterways, development, Russian North, traditional shipbuilding and shipping.
