Karbas of the 17th century. An Oransky find on the coast of Novaya Zemlya

Abstract. The article discusses the results of an interdisciplinary study with the reconstruction of a unique discovery of the remains of a small sailing and rowing vessel from the late 17th century, which was found on the Oransky Islands of the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in 2016 by employees of the Russian Arctic National Park. The article examines the challenges and solutions related to the transportation and preservation of the vessel's remains. The article also provides a reconstruction of the vessel's design, a graphical reconstruction, a theoretical drawing, and a 3D model, as well as the calculation of its main technical characteristics. Based on written sources, it has been established that the vessel was built by order of the Kholmogory Episcopal House as a nomadic fishing boat, an auxiliary vessel for hunting marine animals on Novaya Zemlya, no later than 1694-1696. The results of dendroanalysis have been used to confirm the construction region and date the findings to 1691 based on four wood samples. A comparative analysis of the attribution of the find based on written sources is presented. Against the background of the results of scientific research on the unique find, the need for further research is highlighted, and the problem of insufficient study, identification, preservation, and popularization of Russia's maritime heritage is identified.

Key words: traditional North Russian shipbuilding, preservation, reconstruction of a ship, ship parts, Oransky Islands, koch, karbas, dendroanalysis, written sources, Kholmogory Episcopal House.
