Legendary eskimo settlement Naukan as a part of World Heritage nomination
Abstract. The paper is devoted to Naukan, a settlement included in the Heritage of Chukotka Arctic Sea Hunters World Heritage nomination. It discusses the history of the settlement, the traditional economy and life of its inhabitants, the tragedy of depopulation of Naukan in 1958 and the consequent loss of the ancient cultural traditions. The memory of Naukan has been kept by its inhabitants and their descendants to this day. This cultural heritage site retains its ancient traditional layout with its unique architectural structures. Naukan plays an important role in the history of the Asian Eskimo and have a potential to become an outstanding example of the heritage sites of universal significance.
