Study of the X-ray of “Landscape. Pargolovo” by Fyodor Vasilyev
(the Radischev Art Museum, Saratov)

Abstract. A significant place in the archive of the State Research Institute for Restoration (GOSNIIR) is occupied by a collection of X-rays of Russian paintings. This collection includes unpublished materials essential for studying the work of many major masters. This includes an X-ray of Fyodor Alekseevich Vasiliev's «Landscape. Pargolovo» (1868, A.N. Radishchev Saratov State Art Museum), which clearly reveals the compositional changes the artist made during the process. Analysis of the X-ray also allows us to trace the sequence of work on the painting, characterizing the artist's creative method, and to reveal the significant role of the sky in the figurative structure of the landscape.
