HISTORY OF THE HORSE-BREEDING PORTRAIT
AS A UTILITARIAN GENRE IN THE TRADITIONS OF RUSSIAN ART
OF THE LATE XVIII - XIX CENTURIES

Abstract. The horse has long been a faithful companion and helper of man. Its divine beauty and grace have inspired writers and artists to create timeless works since time immemorial. The tradition of depicting horses dates back to ancient times, existing in various historical periods both as a subordinate and independent art form.

This article, based on an analysis of horse art from ancient cave paintings to the heyday of the animal genre in the 18th and 19th centuries, identifies the main stages in the development of hippite painting as an independent art form and determines the prerequisites and reasons for the emergence of a unique utilitarian genre - the equestrian portrait - developed in the traditions of the Russian school of painting.

Keywords: horse, exterior portrait, Butovich, equestrian portrait, horse breeder, serf artist, image, animal artist, Count A.G. Orlov, painting.
