Biblical scenes on an 18th century tiled stove
of the Novodevichy convent in Moscow
Abstract. The article presents a description of the 18th-century tiles of the stove in the Lopukhin Chambers of the Moscow Novodevichy Convent. Based on the analysis of iconographic sources, European Illustrated Bibles, engravings that served as models for Russian painted tiles have been identified and presented. The article also presents the results of restoration work, based on which one can assume the time of creation of the Lopukhin stove without documentary sources. It was also noted that two main masters, differing in their individual styles, worked on painting the tiles of this stove.
Keywords: tiled stove, Russian painted tiles, biblical engraving, Piscator Bible, Mattheus Merian, Pieter Schut, Theatrum Biblicum, restoration of tiled stoves.
