Historical practices and conceptual evolution in the conservation
of China's large archaeological sites
Abstract. The conservation of China's large archaeological sites has undergone nearly a century of development, marked by a significant evolution in conception from «archaeological excavation» to «heritage conservation» and finally to «public transmission.» This paper systematically examines the three distinct phases of this journey from the 1930s to the present: the foundational period focused on archaeological discovery and research, the development period emphasizing the protection of authenticity and integrity within a legal framework, and the maturation period that prioritizes value transmission and public participation, integrating large sites into national cultural development strategies. Through an analysis of policy evolution, typical case studies, and practical models such as the national archaeological site parks, this article reveals the evolutionary path of large site conservation in China — from a discipline-oriented approach to the publicization of heritage. This path highlights China's conceptual innovations and practical achievements in the field of cultural heritage conservation.
Keywords: large archaeological sites in China, preservation of cultural relics, protection of cultural heritage, evolution of concepts, archaeological monument parks, public archaeology, cultural heritage management.
